East Fife Tri Club

April Race Report

April marked the official start of the triathlon season, and one of the first races to get stuck into was our own Cupar tri.  But before that, there was still time to squeeze a few other events in for Alasdair Hood and Marcus Taylor.

Alasdair started the month at the John Muir Way Ultra Marathon, a 50km trail race near Edinburgh.  He completed it in an impressive 5:10 and commented only that he was ‘tender’ the next day! Hero.

Marcus flirted with divorce on 2nd April by fitting in the Liverpool half marathon before racing across the city to get to his new God Son’s christening.  He made it in time though, thanks to a fantastic time of 1.23.03, claiming a new PB!

Marcus’ final prep for the East Fife Triathlon was a 5km Swimathon on the 7th April, which he completed in 1:19:15.  This is a nationwide charity event raising money for Marie Curie.  It is arguable that this is not ideal tapering for a race two days later, but Marcus doesn’t like to conform!

On the 9th April the club banded together to put on the annual Cupar Tri.  This year, along with our usual sprint and novice race, we held our inaugural Tristars Aquathlon, which we hope will become a regular feature of the event.  We also trialled a new run route to add a mixed terrain race, with some fun hills to raise the challenge.  Thankfully this was well received and we’ll plan to include this in future races!

Most of our members were recruited for the day (though those who raced also helped before and after!) but the racers’ results were as follows:

Name                          Category Pos                  Time

Two weeks later, on the 23rd April, it was all go across the whole country, from London to Loch Ness!

Elise Methven headed south to take part in the coveted London Marathon, and put some demons to bed by smashing her marathon PB in a time of 3.39.12! She has now earnt herself a GFA place to race there again next year. Well done Elise!

Sally Newman-Carter also took on a run in a great city, though not such a distance!  The Great Edinburgh Run is a 10 mile road race taking in some of the most beautiful parts of the city, over quite a hilly course, starting and finishing in Holyrood Park.  She completed it in 1.29.13.

St Andrews University hosted the St Andrews Spring Sprint Triathlon. This is a pool based swim, with a bike to the south of the town and a glorious finish to the run along East Sands Beach promenade.  Well done to Brooke Gillies, Adrian Wood and Jennifer Brooke who all racedFantastic results too: Brooke claimed 1st place in category and 6th female overall in a time of 1.21.19, Adrian came in in 1.28.14 and Jennifer in 1.48.56.

And Tricia Wallace made her way up to the north for the Etape Loch Ness. She completed the 66 mile closed road sportive in a time of 5:01:08.

And to finish the month, there was a massive club turnout at the Kinross Sportive on the 29th.  There is a choice of 3 routes of varying distances, making it a perfect event for all standards.

Doing the 44 mile blue route were Tricia Wallace in 3.04.41 (3rd woman, ‘fair chuffed’!), Linda Hardie in 3.24.31 and Marianne Berghuis in 3.33.37.

Completing the 68 mile red route were Jennifer and Steve Macfarlane in 5.54.00 and 5.54.03 (good of Jen to let Steve draft off her the whole way, but glad she pipped him at the post), Gwen Tivendale in 5.51.32, Chris Wallard in 5.51.36, Tone Brennan in 5.51.34 and Jackie Scanlon in 5.51.34.

Slogging their way round the 87 mile black route (with over 5500 feet of climbing) were Craig Trewartha in a very impressive time of 5.58.37, Sally Newman-Carter in 7.04.31 and Adrian Wood in 7.20.12, seeing massive improvements over last year’s time!

Great month folks! Keep it up!
