East Fife Tri Club

Race Report, August 17th 2015

On Thursday 13th August Glenrothes Triathlon Club hosted the Balbirnie Duathlon.  The challenging evening race is held in the beautiful grounds of Balbirnie Park and proves popular year after year with its 5km run/20km bike 2.5km run format.  Several EFT members took part; Adrian Wood is seeing great progress and working his way up the rankings, coming 33rd overall and 10th in category with a time of 1:22:04. Tone Brennan finished 18th in category in 1:28:10, Cris Wilson 5th in category in 1:29:14, Lynn Hardie was 2nd in category finishing in 1:41:16 and Tracey McFee finished 3rd in category in 1:41:17.  Very well done to all!

On the same evening, Neil Pirie took part in the Knockburn Super Sprint Triathlon, consisting of 400m swim, 6km bike and 3km run.  Neil finished in 42.08 as 8th in a very strong and competitive field

Robert Sparks took part in the Edinburgh Leisure Youth Aquathlon on 16th August.  The race consisted of a 400m swim followed by 3km run over a hilly course.  Robert once again gave an outstanding performance, enjoying the terrain and finishing 2nd in 17:22.

Also on 16th August, the Scottish Middle Distance Championships were held in Aberfeldy, and Elise Methven, Paul Bodger and Sally Newman-Carter all made this their debut middle distance event.  The middle distance format is a challenging endurance event, not for the faint hearted.  It consists of a 1900m swim, 90km bike and 21km run.  The Aberfeldy course is renowned for being a particularly difficult route, taking in the road which rises over Schiehallion twice.  This year the swim leg had to be shortened to 750m due to cold water temperatures.  This was a disappointment to all but necessary for the safety of all competitors.

Elise far exceeded her own expectations, putting in an outstanding performance in all three legs, and finishing in a time of 5:09:15 (12:37/3:00:31/1:47:49).  Hoping for a top 10 in category, she was delighted to realise that she in fact she was 12th female and 2nd in category, claiming a Scottish Championships title in the process.

Paul and Sally both reported having difficult races, but both should be immensely proud of their achievements.  Paul finished in 5:42:27 (14:37/3:12:26/2:08:31) and Sally in 6:18:01 (15:26/3:32:58/2:18:50).

Well done to everyone who competed in all the events, keep up the good work!

Race Report, August 10th 2015

There have been many events over the last few weeks and EFT have been as busy as ever!

Neil Pirie took part in the Shetland sprint triathlon with excellent results.  He finished with an overall time of 1:26:03 with a podium position, achieving 3rd male vet.

Sally Newman-Carter competed at Knockburn Olympic distance triathlon and finished with a time of 2:56:31.  Another well organised event run by Fleet Feet Triathlon Club, set in stunning scenery.  The route had been changed this year to a slightly less hilly run course, however all agreed that in the heat of the day it still presented a difficult challenge.

The Elie triathlon was held on Saturday 8th August, which proved to be a glorious summer’s morning. Adrian Wood and Paul Bodger raced individually, and Jeremy Jones raced as part of a relay team with his wife Esther.  Adrian finished in 1:39:10.  Unfortunately errors with the course signage took some competitors in the wrong direction and so results are still pending for Paul, Jeremy and Esther.

Scott Urquhart, Rhona Graham and Rebecca Trengove took part in the Tour of the Borders Sportive.   The event was marred slightly by bad weather and some crashes causing some lengthy delays for the riders, however fortunately all involved in the crashes have been reported as well.  The team completed the 56 mile closed road event in 3:25.

Race Report, June 30th 2015

The Scottish Youth Championships were held at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow on 27th June.  An exciting event split into several age categories, it is a wonderful opportunity to see the emerging stars of triathlon, and to spot the names of future.

East Fife Tri Club’s youngest member, Robert Sparks, has already proved himself in aquathlon and running races, but made his triathlon debut at Bellahouston Park.  Competing in the Tristars 3 category, Robert did us proud by securing 3rd place position in an extremely competitive field.  He was delighted to achieve a podium place with limited cycling experience.

We look forward to seeing his progress over the next few years and are sure his is a name to watch in the future!

East Fife Tri Race Report 20th July

A busy and exciting few weeks for East Fife Tri members!

On 12th July M3 Triathlon club held their sprint triathlon at Monikie Country Park near Monifieth.  This is a popular event only in its second year, and proving itself to be a must in the race calendar.

We had representation from Luca Basso, Beverly Gibson, Adrian Wood and Aaron Anderson.  Beverly once again put in a superb performance, finishing in 1.20.27 and bagging herself 1st place in her category and 4th female overall!  Luca also stormed the course, finishing in 1.18.04, 4th in his category.  Aaron was strong throughout and finished in 1.25.22 and Adrian is going from strength to strength, and despite suffering from severe cramp coming off the bike, finished in 1.35.35.

The following weekend, Luca and Beverly continued their winning streak at the Scottish Aquathlon Championships at Loch Lomond.  Luca secured a Silver medal finishing 2nd male vet in 33.42, and Beverly added a Gold medal to her Scottish Championship haul finishing 1st female vet in 35.08.

Beverly and Luca return to Italy at the end of this month, having spent just over a year in St Andrews.  We will miss them greatly and wish them all the very best!

This weekend was also the culmination of months of hard work for Jamie MacDonald who has been committed to training for his first Ironman race at the Ironman UK in Bolton.  This is a gruelling event, seen by many as the ultimate challenge, consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run.  The club watched his progress with the online tracker and were thrilled to see him making excellent progress, completing the swim in 1.14.30, the bike in 6.45.59 and the run in 4.25.47, with an overall time of 12.53.19.  Jamie was delighted with his achievement and the club is tremendously proud of him!

There were also podium places for East Fife Tri Club at the Bruce Triathlon at Lochore on 14th June.  Elise Methven, Adrian Wood, Adrian Allan, Beverly Gibson, Luca Basso, Robert Sparks and Anna Hedley all competed, on a day so cold that Elise needed help from a marshall to help get her bike helmet off. Despite the cold Bev finished 2nd Female Vet, Elise was 3rd Female Vet, Anna was 2nd Female Tristar 2 and Robert was 3rd Male Tristar 3.

Scott Robinson, who’s recently joined the club having just moved to Leuchars with the Army, competed in his first Ironman 70.3 in Staffordshire (swim: 1.2 miles, bike: 56 miles, run: 13.1 miles – total 70.3 miles), finishing in an excellent time of 6:33:27 (38:59, 3:20:41, 2:21:10).

The Scottish Sprint Championships were held on the 21st June, for the second consecutive year at Knockburn Sports Loch near Banchory, hosted by Fleet Feet Triathlon Club.

Another superb event, comprising 750m swim, 18km bike and 5km run, within a beautiful man made loch and stunning countryside.  The event attracted some of Scotland’s best athletes, boasting a very strong field.

Club members Beverly Gibson, Luca Basso and Sally Newman-Carter all took part, and Bev continued her successful streak, finishing 3rd Female Vet in 1:11:40, and taking home a Scottish Championship trophy in the process.  Luca also put in a sterling performance finishing as 5th Male Vet in 1:07:57.  Sally finished 10th senior female in 1:22:21.

Finally, Adrian Wood and Jamie MacDonald opted for something a little different on 20th June, both running with teams in the Tough Mudder in Dumfries. An obstacle course testing strength, endurance and of course teamwork, it is an event increasing in popularity every year!  Perhaps we'll consider an EFT team next year...!
